ちょうど２年前にプロモーション来日したデイヴィッド・マネリィは聞きしに勝る変人だった。とにかく、実際に演奏することだけでなく、アコーディオンと古いアイリッシュ・トラッド・フォークに関することが何よりも大好きで、酒なしで（彼はアイリッシュにはきわめて珍しく下戸だ）何時間でも泡をとばしながらしゃべり続けてしまう。からだは小太りで、目元からはちょっと変質狂的な怪しい輝きが発している。（マネリィ君、ごめん！）。まさに、根っからのアコーディオン＆伝統音楽おたく、一種の極道者と言っていい。来日時のインタヴューを思い出す。

――76年生まれということは、80年代の半ばが子ども時代ですよね？　だと、普通ならラジオから流れてくるロックだとかポップスも聴いてたと思うんだけど。
　「ラジオをかけるたびに流れてたけどね。だけど僕は、自分はアイリッシュ・ミュージックが好きなんだってわかってたから、ポップスとかロックには、全然寄り道しなかった。ポップ・ミュージックやロックは、僕には全然関係なかったよ。もうアイリッシュ・ミュージックが自分の人生だ、この道しかないと思ってたからね」

――きっと近所でも変わった子供だったんだろうね。
　「そうだよ！　Why not!　他のやつらは、ラジオに頼ってるばっかりなんだ。僕はラジオなんか聴かなくたって、自分の部屋へ行ってアコーディオンをとりあげて、自分自身で楽しむことができたんだ」

――近所の子供たちには、マネリィの家のデイヴィッドは小さいのにアコーディオンばっかり弾き、古い音楽ばっかり聴いてるぜ、って噂されてたのかな。
　「僕は全然心配してなかったよ！」
　「デイヴには友だちが全然いなかったんだ！（笑）」（相棒のギタリスト、ギャヴィン・ラルストン）
　「結局のところ、僕が気にかけていたのは、アイリッシュ・ミュージックだけだったんだ。学校に行くと、みんな医者や先生になりたがった。でも、僕はミュージシャンになりたかった。今、僕はミュージシャンだが、他のやつは医者でもなければ先生でもない。結局どっちが勝ったかってことだよ。ウォーホーイ！（笑）」

　しかしマネリィの場合、ただのアコーディオン＆伝統音楽おたくではない。それだけだったら、今のアイルランドにはまだ他にもたくさんいるだろう。彼の場合は、今世紀初頭のアメリカにおけるアイリッシュ・トラッド研究を通じて、スウィング・ジャズやユダヤ音楽、マヌーシュ・スウィング、カントリーといった関連領域にまで関心を広げ、それらを綜合するような独自の音楽を作り出しているのだ。この若さで。実際、01年秋に出たデビュー・アルバム『Swing...』を初めて聴いた時の驚きたるや、かなりのものだった。フラナガン・ ブラザーズやジョン・Ｊ・キンメルといった今世紀前半にアメリカで活躍したアイリッシュ・トラッドやジャズ系の巨人たちのレパートリーをとりあげ、めいっぱいスウィンギーかつ洒脱に飛ばしまくっていたから。「録音の際に僕らが決めたのは、20年代の伝統音楽バンド、フラナガン・ブラザーズが、ステファン・グラッペリとジャンゴ・ラインハルトが率いたホット・クラブ・ド・パリに出会ったようなものにすることだった。僕の自作チューンはその両方から生まれている。彼らが主要な影響の二つなんだ」というのは、デビュー・アルバムの五十嵐正さんによるライナーで紹介されていたマネリィの発言だが、なるほど、そんなサウンドではある。そのフラナガンズについて、マネリィは来日時にも興奮しながら語っていた。「僕は、マイケル・コールマンとかジェイムズ・モリスンとか、そういう昔のフィドル奏者の演奏を探っていって、1920年代に行きついた。最初、デ・ダナンの『ボールルーム』を聴いて、そこでフラナガン・ブラザーズのことが書いてあって、これは誰だろうと調べて、やっと見つけてアルバムを聴いたってわけだ」。ちなみにデ・ ダナンはそれよりも前の81年のアルバム『Star-Spangled Molly』でもフラナガンズの「My Irish Molly-O」を、モーラ・オコンネルをフィーチャリング・シンガーとしてとりあげている。ついでに言うと、ヴァン・モリスンがかの『ラスト・ワルツ』のライヴで熱唱していた「Tura-Lura-Lural (That's an Irish Lullaby)」も、「My Irish Molly-O」と並ぶフラナガンズの有名レパートリーである。
　ジョー（歌／アコーディオン）、マイク（バンジョー／マンドリン）、ルイス（ギター／バンジョー）のフラナガン３兄弟は、19世紀末にアイルランドのウォーターフォードに生まれ、両親と共に1911年にアメリカに移民として渡った。やがてニューヨークで伝統音楽家として頭角を現し、20〜30年代にはかなりの数の録音を残している。彼らは基本的にはアイリッシュ・トラッドの演奏家だったわけだが、この頃はまさに、アメリカのジャズの揺籃期にあたり、黒人音楽、ジューイッシュ音楽、アイリッシュ音楽、ヨーロッパのクラシック音楽などが相互に影響を与えつつ混交を続けていた。当然フラナガン兄弟も、ジャズの音楽家などと密に交流を持ち、共演することも少なくなかったし、彼らのバックをしばしば努めたのは、ジューイッシュのクラリネット奏者たちだった。ちなみに、先ほど名前の上がったジョン・Ｊ・キンメルは、アイリッシュ・チューンを最も最初期に録音したニューヨークの有名なメロディオン奏者だが、彼はドイツ系移民だったりする。アメリカのジャズなどのダンスホール音楽が、アイルランドのケイリー・バンドの成立〜変化に深く関わっていることは明らかだし、また、30年代には、ヨーロッパではジャンゴ・ラインハルトがマヌーシュ・スウィング（ジプシー・スウィング）のスタイルを完成させ、それが再びジャズの本場アメリカに逆流し、様々な音楽に絶大な影響を与えてゆくことになったり……つまり、20世紀前半には、大西洋をはさんで、人種や国籍、音楽スタイルなどの混交と流通が盛んに行われていたわけで、マネリィの音楽には、そういったエキサイティングな時代の混血音楽に対するオマージュとしての側面もあるのだ。
　来日時に彼はこうも言っていた。「僕は、おばあちゃんがたくさん持っていたアイリッシュ音楽のレコードをいつも聴いていたんだ。『ボールルーム』もそうだった。おばあちゃんもあのアルバムが大好きでね。マーティン・オコナーとフランキー・ギャヴィンが一緒に演奏するのを聴くのはすごく楽しかった。頭をゆすったり足を踏みならしたりしながら、おばあちゃんは、それはそれは楽しそうに笑いながら聴いていた。なんというか、音楽を演奏するということだけじゃなくて、音楽を生きているって感じがしたんだ。音楽を楽しみ、スイングするために、あのアルバムはある。おばあちゃんが楽しんでたのは、そこだと思うんだ。彼女には、そこにエネルギーが見えていたんだと思う」。この発言は、そのままマネリィの現在の音楽のことを言い表したものであり、また、音楽家としての彼のマニフェストでもあると、僕には思える。２年ぶりに出た待望の新作を聴いて、今改めてその感を強めている次第だ。

　さて、「なんてこったい！」といったニュアンスのタイトルのこの新作、いろんな点で前作の路線を引き継いだ内容である。現在ビギニッシュのメンバーであり、マネリィの最良の理解者／協力者そしてプロデューサーであるギタリストのギャヴィン・ラルストン、フィドルのダラ・ブラッケン（元ダヌー、現スライド）、そしてデイヴィッドの実弟であるフルート／ボーラン奏者のキーラン・マネリィの３人が中心になってマネリィを支え、その他随所でベースのジョー・シービ、ドラムのロイド・バーン、サックスのリッチー・バックリー、マンドリンのポール・ケリー、シンガーのアンドリュー・マレイといった前作にも参加した面々が加わっている。(4)と(12)で歌うマレイは、一時期マネリィもメンバーだったデ・ダナンの元メンバーで、かのデジー・オハロランと並ぶイニシュボフィン島の有名人だ。その(4)は、過去にもボニー・レイットやエミルー・ハリス、 ネヴィル・ブラザーズ、メアリー・ブラックといった多くのシンガーたちもカヴァしてきたリチャード・トンプソンの名曲（オリジナルはリチャード＆リンダ・トンプソン『Pour Down Like Silver』収録で、歌はリンダ）だが、こういう３拍子のアレンジでやるってのも、マネリィらしい気がする。また(8)でちょっとドロレス・レーンにも似た腰の据わった歌を披露しているヘレン・フラハティは、ベルギーで活動するアイリッシュ・バンド、シャンタラのメンバー。曲はスコットランドのシンガー・ソングライター、ダギー・マクリーンのカヴァだが、ダギーの曲は前作でもやっていた。よっぽどお気に入りなのだろう。
　お気に入りということでは、オープニング・ナンバーからワン、トゥー、スリーの３連発でジョン・Ｊ・キンメルとフラナガン・ブラザーズのレパートリーをならべているのも目を引く。まるでビッグ・バンドのような迫力で突進する(1)の豪快さ、ケイリー・バンドがマヌーシュ・スウィングをやったかのような(3)の絶妙な味など、マネリィ組の真骨頂だろう。３連曲の最後の１曲はラ・ボッティン・ スリアント（ケベックのトラッド・バンド）のメロディオン奏者イヴ・ランベールから習ったというフレンチ・カナディアンの組曲(5)におけるゴムまりのようなスウィングぶりも素晴らしい。ここでマネリィが使っているワン・ロウのメロディオンは、実は先の来日の時に下北沢のトラッド酒場ヴィレッジ・グリーン（残念ながら去年閉店となった）のオーナーにして有名なイラストレイター兼アコーディオン・コレクターでもある米山永一さんからプレゼントされたものだ。その楽器を使いたくてやったようなドンピシャな曲である。また、そういう飛ばしまくる曲だけでなく、たとえば(8)におけるピアノ伴奏のように、シンガーをしっかり引き立てる術もしっかり心得ているのが、マネリィのいいところ。確かな歌心があるからこそ、曲ごとのヴィジョンがこちらにしっかりと伝わってくる。前述のマネリィの発言を再び引用すれば、「音楽を演奏するということだけじゃなくて、音楽を生きている」、そして「そこにエネルギーが見える」、そんな素晴らしいアルバムではなかろうか。
　うれしいことに、この５月には、再びプロモーション来日することが決まっている。今回は、前回以上にあちこち（大阪や名古屋、福岡まで）のレコード店や商店街で実演するつもりらしい。テディ・ ベアのような蛇腹極道のスウィング・パワーは、きっと多くの通行人をも幸せにすることだろう。

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the Irish music of the 1920's. This tune was written sometime during that decade and I think it was first recorded by the great Flanagan brothers, then John J Kimmel, and more recently in the 1950's by Jean Carignan.

Charlotte's Reel  (D.Munnelly)
This tune was written for Charlotte Vastrup, whom Gav and I met at the Tonder Festival, Denmark in August 1998. She is a fantastic woman who showed us around and became a great friend. We returned in February for a tour and she travelled with us, ending up as our unofficial Tour Manager, Interpreter, CD seller and Guardian Angel.  This is my tribute to a great person.
も〜女の子の名前のリールだよ、と思ったら、彼女じゃなくてデンマークのトナー・フェスティバルで出会ったスタッフの子の名前みたい。デヴィッド、次作には、ぜひヨーコのリールを頼んだよ！！・・すみません、バカなことを言いました。とにかく楽しい１曲。

An Carraigin (D. Munnelly)
I wrote this air on a beautiful July evening in our kitchen in Belmullet. As I looked out  the window I could clearly see across the calm waters of Blacksod Bay to lovely Claggan Island and beyond to the great Sliabh M羊 mountain in Achill.  The whole view seemed to be painted in  light purple with the gold and silver of the sea shimmering beneath it. A powerful and  peaceful scene.  Right in the middle of the bay, oblivious to the beauty all around it , I could see the mystical black rock known locally as an Carraig地. This reminded  me of all the times I spent down by the shore, among the colours and textures of the stones and plants just gazing out on that independent natural sculpture standing guard over the bay.

Phil Henry's / The Next Parish  (D. Munnelly)
The first one I wrote for my cousin Phil Henry who comes from the village of Shraigh in County Mayo. The second one- well, some  people say that the next Parish to Belmullet is New York, and that on a clear day you might just be able to catch a glimpse of that city. Well no matter how hard I've looked I still haven't managed to spot it-yet! I wrote the tune with this in mind.

Reel  de Rimouski  (Trad Arr; Munnelly/Ralston)
This French Canadian tune was written by Fortunat Malouin ( 1870-1935) the famous fiddle playing, travelling salesman. In 1928 it was first recorded on a seventy-eight for  Columbia Records, but I learned it from the Buttons and Bows album "Grace Notes".

I've always been a big fan of the songs and the singing of that great Scotsman Dougie Maclean. I had the  pleasure of meeting him at the Tonder Festival in 1998 where I discovered that not only is he a great musician and composer-he's also a gentleman. This song is the title track of an album by Dougie and its one of my all time favourite songs. Its sung here by another great singer and gentleman, Andrew Murray ,who also happens to be a huge Dougie Maclean fan.

Lively Leah (T. Price)
This reel was written by my good friend Tina Price, a brilliant composer and musician from Rathkenny Co. Meath. Tina wrote this tune for her three year old daughter Leah - I think the title is self explanatory.
実は、この曲は、アイルランドからきたこのアルバムの仮CDRの１曲目に入ってたのでした。だから個人的にはすごく好きな１曲だし、このアルバムを代表する音がこの曲に集約されていると思う。

Jock Cawleys Jigs (Trad arr. Munnelly/ Bracken/ Ralston)
A couple of lovely old tunes that myself and Daire Bracken used to play as seperate sets. One night we introduced them to each other and  they got on so well together that they have been married ever since. The introduction must have been very informal because we still don't know the correct names for them. I learnt the last jig from a great box player and exponent of Erris music Michael "Jock" Cawley from the village of Glosh near Blacksod on the Mullet peninsula

Between The Tides (caoineadh  Micheal Mac Ruaidhri)  (D. Munnelly.)
I was commissioned to write the title music for a T.V. documentary  based on the life of the great  writer, seanchai and patriot Micheal Mac Ruaidhri( (1860-1936) from Foghill in County Mayo. Miche�l was the great friend of Padraig Pearse and  was with him  in the G.P.O. in 1916. This  nearly forgotten scholar wrote six books in the Irish language, numerous poems and won eight Oireachtas gold medals for oratory and story-telling. From the foundation of Scoil ヂnna ( Pearses School ) in Rathfarnham, Dublin in 1908, he was the school gardener and taught practical horticulture to the pupils. He was called " The Mayo Poet " by Douglas Hyde because of the musical quality of his Irish. Miche�l was a great lover of the sea, and I wrote this air for him while sitting on Lacken Strand, near the spot where he was born.
